“I had been practicing Pilates at a studio in suburban Boston for a number of years using non-Gratz equipment and was none the wiser. My very first experience with a Gratz Reformer was at a studio in New York City. After the first repetition of Short Spine Massage, I stopped and said: ‘Wait. That just changed the exercise.’ It was a defining moment and what led me to understand one needs to perform the exercises according to their original specifications in order to achieve maximum results. Pure and simple – Gratz provides a superior experience.”

TRUE PILATES BOSTON

STUDIO

True Pilates Boston opened in December 2016 in a historic former mill building on the banks of the Charles River in Newton, MA. The spacious and sunny studio features a full complement of Gratz apparatus and specializes in private and semi-private instruction. The facility and program are unique to the area.

Owner Mary Sullivan Kelly is passionate about the Pilates method and the benefits it provides practitioners of all ages and from all walks of life. She fosters a supportive yet challenging atmosphere and is committed to staying as true as possible to the teachings of Joseph Pilates while honoring his vision of “complete coordination of body, mind, and spirit.”

Mary Sullivan Kelly

Owner/Instructor

Mary opened True Pilates Boston in order to bring authentic Pilates to the area. She is inspired every day by how Pilates helps to change her clients’ bodies and lives.

Mary left a career in commercial real estate in order to pursue her passion for Pilates. She received her certification from Romana's Pilates, under the instruction of the world-class trainers at True Pilates New York and employing techniques that are as close to the original teaching of Joseph Pilates as are available anywhere.

Mary holds a BA from Simmons College and an MBA from Boston University.

Karen Leopardi

Instructor

Karen received her certification from Romana’s Pilates at True Pilates New York in 2009 and most recently became an Assistant Instructor in the “Pilates for the Dressage Rider” method which teaches riders how to use their bodies to help them achieve harmony in movement with their horses.

Karen is also a musician and a member of the administration of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. She sees Pilates as a discipline, learning to move from the center of the body and engaging one’s mind to stretch, gain strength and control the body, in much the same way as music is a discipline.

Karen is the Associate Director for Faculty and Guest Artists at the Tanglewood Music Center and received degrees in Performance and Music Education from the New England Conservatory of Music.

EQUIPMENT

True Pilates Boston offers Gratz apparatus in order to provide clients with the best experience and to instill in them an appreciation for the authentic work. Anything less than full access to the complete system as devised by Joseph Pilates is simply not true Pilates.

To this end, the studio has four each of the Gratz reformers, studio wall/mat units, and wunda chairs. Additional features include assorted barrels, a cadillac, high chair, small arm chair, pedi pole, and various smaller accessories.

Mary’s favorite apparatus is the Gratz wunda chair. The studio’s signature piece is a single Tomato red chair intended to honor the lone red seat in Fenway Park’s right field bleachers. If you do not understand this reference, Mary will still welcome you to the studio – with open arms and an asterisk.
