NEBOSH National General Certificate

If you are a manager or supervisor or seeking to become a safety practioner then you have Health and Safety responsibilities.

International General Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health

The NEBOSH National General Certificate has been recognised for many years in the UK as the basis for a sound, broad introduction to the fundamentals of occupational health and safety.  The key difference between the National Certificate and the International Certificate is in the applicability of legal requirements.  While health and safety in the UK is underpinned by an established and well-structured set of legislative requirements, which cannot be excluded from a national award, this is less relevant in an international context.  The syllabus therefore omits specific reference to any national legal requirements but, instead, focuses on international standards, in particular ILO codes of practice. In common with the national award, however, the syllabus is structured according to a recognised management framework.

The Certificate will equip you with the following practical skills to satisfy this demanding role.

Recognising Hazards
Assessing Risks
Implementing appropriate means of control.
Applying Legal and Organisational standards.
Motivating the Workforce
Recognising the influence human factors.
Monitoring performance.
Carrying out effective workplace inspections

The NEBOSH International General Certificate syllabus is as follows:

Unit IGC 1: Management of International Health & Safety:

  1. Foundations in health & safety
  2. Policy
  3. Organising for health & safety
  4. Promoting a positive health & safety culture
  5. Risk Assessment
  6. Principles of Control
  7. Monitoring, review and audit
  8. Occupational incident and accident investigation, recording and reporting

Unit IGC 2: Control of International workplace hazards:

  1. Movement of People and Vehicles – Hazards and control
  2. Manual and mechanical handling – hazards and control
  3. Working equipment hazards and control
  4. Electrical hazards and control
  5. Fire hazards and control
  6. Chemical and biological hazards and control
  7. Physical and psychological hazards and control
  8. Construction activities – hazards and controls

The Certificate is intended to enable managers and supervisors to discharge more effectively their health and safety responsibilities to the organisation and to those they manage. It will help to ensure that decisions are made from a position of knowledge across a broad range of hazards and work activities.

The Certificate course is a demanding but rewarding experience that is designed to complement existing managerial skills. The core competence is transferable across all employment sectors, which makes the qualification highly respected and valued by employers.

Holders of the International General Certificate have demonstrated that they possess a broad base of knowledge and understanding of health and safety such that they can manage their everyday activities safely, with health and safety as an integral part rather than a bolt - on extra. With the Certificate you will be able to make a valuable contribution to reducing losses to your organisation and harm to your fellow employees.
